Privacy Policy
Effective October 3, 2026
Nearby Access lets people show and transfer files, photos, videos, links, contacts, and calendar events to people nearby. It works without an account. This policy describes the Nearby Access iPhone app and its Share extension.
Information on your device
Nearby Access stores items you add, lists, your nearby display name and local profile identifier, blocked people, notification settings and history, and reports you create on your iPhone. An item received for preview may be kept temporarily on your device; downloading or saving it creates a copy in the destination you choose. The app does not run its own cloud-storage or account service. Your iPhone’s system backup may include app data if you enable backup.
Nearby Access does not send this information to a developer-operated server. It does not use advertising or analytics SDKs and does not track you across other companies’ apps or websites.
What nearby people can see and receive
Nearby Access uses local network discovery and a direct, encrypted nearby connection to communicate with other devices. Discovery can expose your chosen nearby display name and a locally generated identifier to people using Nearby Access. When you turn on Display or use Quick Access, connected nearby people can see the names, types, sizes, and list names of items you make visible, and may receive thumbnails. Link items can reveal their URLs. They can open or download visible items; password-protected items require the correct item password. Passwords entered by recipients are sent to your device for checking over the encrypted nearby session. A recipient can keep or share a copy of any item they save. You control which items are on your display and can turn Display off.
If you block a nearby profile, Nearby Access stores its identifier on your device and uses it to stop sharing your display with that profile. This is an app-level block based on an identifier, not an identity verification system.
Permissions and other apps
- Local Network: Finds and connects to nearby devices. Nearby Access is designed to discover and transfer directly without an account, internet service, or shared Wi-Fi. Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, Local Network permission, and iOS or network conditions affect whether a connection succeeds.
- Nearby Interaction: On compatible devices, shows an approximate distance to a connected device. Nearby Access does not request your geographic location.
- Contacts: The system contact picker lets you choose a contact to turn into a shareable contact card. Nearby Access does not automatically share your address book.
- Calendar: If you grant access, Nearby Access reads events on the device so you can choose which events to add. Only events you choose are placed in your Nearby Access items.
- Photos and Files: System pickers let you choose items to add. If you choose Save to Photos, Nearby Access requests permission to add the received photo or video. You may save or share received files through iOS system controls.
- Notifications: If enabled, Nearby Access shows local notices about app activity. You can change notification categories in Profile or change system permission in iPhone Settings.
If you open a link someone shared, your browser or the linked site may receive information under its own privacy practices. If you save or share an item through Photos, Files, or another app, that destination handles the copy under its own settings and policies.
Retention and deletion
Items and lists remain on your device until you remove them or delete local app data. The app may remove older unsaved temporary previews to make room for new ones. You can use Profile → Local data → Delete all local data to remove Nearby Access local items, lists, blocked profiles, reports, and notification history. Your chosen display name and local profile identifier may remain in device preferences; removing the app removes its local app data, subject to iOS backups. Copies already saved by recipients or in another app cannot be deleted from their devices by Nearby Access.
Children and changes
Nearby Access is intended for general use and does not provide a child-specific service. If this policy changes, the updated version and its effective date will be posted at this URL. A new app version may change the data practices described here; the App Store privacy answers should be updated when that happens.
